The Cut Fashion Academy

I was excited to begin the 2 Week Sewing Intensive. There are some positives: I had called and spoken to the owner before signing up and she was so helpful on the phone. The location and classrooms are great. Lots of drafting tables, new sewing machines, bright overhead lights. Instructor was kind and knowledgeable. The bad: 1. lack of equipment/supplies. Never seemed to have enough bobbins for students, no pins (everyone ended up buying and bringing their own), no snips, just nubs of chalk which made tracing patterns for newbies tricky, shears weren’t sharp for cutting fabric - I brought my own but by Week 2 they had sharpened the in class shears. Would not have minded if they just told us ahead of time to come prepared with our own supplies. I’ve taken other sewing classes elsewhere and never had this issue. Lastly, there was only 1 pattern in each size so students had to share when tracing and cutting - that meant a lot of waiting around, and I personally felt rushed to trace out my patterns. 2. There were 7 of us in the class and only 1 working iron. That meant a lot of waiting around when we needed to press seams. To compensate, the instructor would move on to the next step but then people started to fall behind on where they were or there was disorganization on what step we were actually on. 3. In our last week, there were two days in a row where another Instructor for a different class did not show up, and my Instructor ended up teaching the other class at the same time as our class. The classes were doing different projects and that meant a lot of waiting around. 4. We all sew at different speeds. The course listed 4 items to sew and some people did not complete all the items. I would not have minded completing less items if it meant I had a clear understanding of what I was sewing instead of rushing to finish. A check in midway might have been helpful - if the class is moving slower than the “standard pace” we should have been able to pivot and do less projects in order to really hone in on the skills. Alternatively, people who claim to be beginners but actually know how to sew and are more independent can elect to work on more projects while the actual beginners can go at a slower pace. I think with some attention to improving the availability and access to equipment, as well as the time management aspects of the program, the Sewing Intensive course would be stellar.

I took the 2 week intensive sewing course at the Cut Academy & had such a great time. Komal with the help of Justine taught the class through out the 2 weeks. We made a pillow, tote bag, crewneck, and button of shirt. We also learned different types of stitching, zippers, and other basics. It was very informative and I feel confident to take some of these skills home and continue to build on them. However, I do wish we had one more class because we didn’t finish our button up shirts! The small size class was a bonus, we were able to get lots of hands on help individually. Recommend 10/10 and totally worth the $. Had a great & positive experience!

I took the 2-week pattern making intensive, it was the perfect class to take my sewing hobby up a notch. The classes were small and intimate. We learned how to create blocks for a skirt, pants and a bodice. You have lots of time to perfect each block. Our teacher was Frederique and he was amazing. He clearly loves constructing clothes and sharing his knowledge. He wanted us to succeed and come away with a good knowledge base. You really get out what you put into these classes. The 4 hours fly by. I found that i ended up doing 4-5 hours of homework before each class and that set me up to learn and absorb more. I must stress that the teacher is what made this class, without the proper leadership we wouldn't have received the top quality instruction that we did. I feel more confident moving forward and hope to come back and take a few more classes when I am ready.

I had the privilege of attending The Cut Design Academy for the Pattern Making and Assembling Techniques Certificate. This program helped me tremendously in beginning my career as a pattern maker and seamstress. Along the way, I was lucky enough to make lifelong friends as well! Liza truly goes above and beyond for her students, not just during the program, but long after. She’s always there to offer guidance, support, and opportunities, making The Cut a special place to learn and grow. I highly recommend The Cut to anyone looking for an academy with intimate classes, exceptional instructors, and a place where you’ll always feel welcome to return.

I took a 2 week beginner sewing course at The Cut. The instructor Komal was superb. The location and facility was great. I highly recommended taking a course here.
